About the Process: This scene comes after a series of scenes outlining the outrageous and unsustainable economic costs of the four lower Snake river dams. After appealing to logic, we wanted to reconnect the audience emotionally to the whales and to fuse those facts and feelings together. This tragic event occurred after principal photography and there was very limited footage. I cut it with room to grieve and settle in the discomfort. This scene always provokes a strong audience response with tears and gasps.
